Abstract

916,649. Friction clutches; reverse gearing. STANTON, P. G. May 15, 1959 [May 29, 1958], No. 17164/58. Class 80 (2). A multiple disc clutch 15 connects a driving- shaft 1 journalled in plain shell bearings 21 in a casing 20 to a driven drum 3 journalled upon the casing by a plain bearing 22 when fluid under pressure is admitted through pipes 23 in the bearing assembly to act upon a ring-shaped piston 16 against the bias of clutch disengaging springs 18. In the form shown, the drum 3 carries upon spindles 7 interengaging planet pinions 8 meshing with sun gears 11, 12 upon the driving-shaft 1 and a driven shaft 2, respectively. Forward drive is obtained by engagement of the clutch 15, and reverse is obtained by disengaging the clutch 15 and instead applying a brake (not shown) to station the drum 3. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the interengaging planet pinions 8 mesh with the sun gear 11 and with a ring gear stationed to obtain reverse. In another form, Fig. 2 (not shown), the drum 3 is shown connected directly to the output shaft 2. As a modification, a driven pinion may be mounted upon the drum 3.
