In an apparatus for winding in and paying out at a constant tension, a supply cable 13 to be run synchronously with a winch load cable 6, the two cables are wound on individual drums 12, 5 which are connected with a joint drive mechanism including a differential gear unit 10 having its planet carrier constantly rotatably loaded in one direction only. The planet wheels of the unit 10, engage an input sun-wheel chain driven from the shaft 4 of the drum 5, and an output sun-wheel coupled to the drum 12, and have a carrier formed as a drum around which is wound a rope 20 constantly loaded by a weight 22. The loading on the rope 20, which may alternatively be applied by springs, pressure cylinders or motors driving through slip clutches, compensates for the changing weight of cable 13 payed out, and any slack which develops in the cable.
