Abstract

1,144,818. Winches. THOMPSON BROS. (ENG.) [Ltd. 30 Nov., 1966, No. 53684/66. Heading B8B. [Also in Division H2] A winch mounted on a trailer 1 for drawing a cable connected to a rope 8 along a trench, comprises two parallel wheels 11, each having a plurality of spaced circular grooves in planes normal to the axis, and a reeling drum 17 adapted to take up the rope 8 passing from the wheels 11; the drum 17 being driven from the wheels 11 via a V-belt which slips at a predetermined tension thereof. The rope 8 passing from the trench moves around a guide pulley 7 and a pulley 10 prior to engaging the wheels 11. The pulley 10 is mounted on a bell crank 9 which is coupled via link 12 to a load cell 13 having a suitable load dial. The two wheels 11 form an elongated winding drum for the rope 8 from which the latter passes to the reeling drum 17 via a pulley 15 mounted on a laterally swingable guide arm 16 which aids the-laying of the rope on to the drum 17. The wheels 11 are driven from an internalcombustion engine through a clutch, reversable gearing, an overload coupling and a reduction gear. The reeling drum 17 is driven by the V-belt from a pulley 28 coupled to the reduction gear-shaft via a one way clutch effecting a drive in the reeling-in direction. The V-belt is tensioned by a weighted or spring loaded jockey pulley. The drum 17 is connected through a further one way clutch to a brake to provide resistance when the rope is being payed out.
