Abstract

1,120,225. Winches. PALMER'S TRAVELLING CRADLE & SCAFFOLD CO. Ltd. 29 July, 1965 [31 July, 1964], No. 30358/64. Heading B8B. An apparatus for winding on separate drums both load suspension and control cables at a common linear speed comprises a power driven suspension cable drum, Fig. 1 (not shown), operatively connected to a control cable drum 26 via a chain transmission and a spiral spring coupling 45 which is pre-set to exert a tension on the control cable during winding and unwinding, in excess of the dead weight of the cable. Shaft 35 driven by the chain transmission from the suspension cable drum freely rotatably mounts a housing 44 for the spiral spring. The latter has its inner end secured to a sleeve 48 fast on the shaft 35 and its outer end secured to the cylindrical housing 44 which forms one flange of the control cable drum 26. The end of shaft 35 is journalled in the end of a shaft 39 to which the drum 26 is secured and which is journalled to the apparatus frame at 42. A slip ring unit 43 facilitates electrical power supply to the cable on drum 26. In another embodiment, the control cable is tensioned by either a spring loaded reel associated with the load, or a spring loaded jockey pulley providing a tensional bight on the control cable, the two drums still being coupled for driving.
