Abstract
1,167,027. Cable making apparatus. GENERAL CABLE CORP. 23 Nov., 1966 [1 Feb., 1966], No. 52359/66. Heading H1A. Apparatus for assembling a telephone cable consists of a payoff section 10 for supplying strand units at uniform tension, twisting means which may include a twist compensator 18, a taping head 22, and a take-up cabler 28 which by revolving about axis 46 of the cable also forms part of the twisting means. The payoff section may be partially operated by its own power means; e.g. each payoff unit 12 may have an electric motor (132) (Figs. 3, 4, 5, not shown) driving each spool 98 by a system of chains and sprockets; the rest of the power being supplied by the pull from the take-up cabler. The uniform tension of the strand units may be achieved by automatically controlling these electric motors. The twist compensator which is described in detail (Figs. 6, 7, 8, not shown) may be driven at the same or slightly higher speed than the cabler by a power means such as a motor 36, shaft 88 and chains or belts 38, 96. There may be spacing means for the strand-units such as an apertured plate 16 located between the payoff section and the twist compensator. The taping head 22 having reels 60 may be of conventional construction and a paper tape may be used. Reversible driving means may be provided to unwind the cable and wind the tape back on to reels 60 &c., and a device 66 may be provided for measuring the length of cable supplied to the cabler.
