Abstract
1373499 Stranding wire WARNER & SWASEY CO 3 Nov 1971 [14 May 1971] 51050/71 Heading D1T [Also in Division G3] "Dead" or "neutral" steel cord is stranded in apparatus comprising a secondary twister 27 which applies an excess twist to the wires, and a primary twister 25 which permits them to untwist to the neutral condition, the two twisters being driven at speeds maintained in a constant ratio by a control system (Fig. 3) comprising signal generating means 77, 78 responsive to the two speeds # 1 and # 2 , means 90 for selecting the required ratio, means 91 for comparing the two signals and providing an error signal e if the ratio differs from that required, and compensator means 92 for improving the response of the control system at low rates of change of speed ratio, the system being arranged to control the speed of one of the twisters. After passing through a face-plate 38 and a closing die 51 the wires pass round sheaves 47, 46 of the secondary twister 27, which is rotated by a motor 71. The cord then passes around grooved capstan rollers 61', 62 mounted on a flyer 57 constituting the primary twister 25 and via the flyer arm 59 to a take up bobbin 23 which is traversed and driven at a constant speed. Passage of the cord around capstan roller 61', which is geared to the flyer, causes the flyer to rotate, its speed # 1 being indicated to the control system by a tachogenerator 77. A potentiometer 90 (Fig. 3) enables the signal level to be adjusted to produce any desired speed ratio, the output therefrom being compared with that from a tacho-generator 78 driven by the secondary or pretwister 27, the error signal controlling, via an amplifier 93, the pre-twister motor 71. The compensator network 92, (Fig. 5) has component values selected to provide high gain in the loop at low frequencies, without causing instability at high ones. The arrangement is said to control the pre-twister velocity to within 1rpm with a range of primary twister speeds of from 0 to 4,000 rpm.
