Abstract

1,167,662. Winches. THOMPSON BROS. (ENGS.) Ltd. 14 Aug., 1968 [20 March, 1968], No. 13578/68. Addition to 1,144,818. Heading B8B. [Also in Division H2] The winch of the parent Specification 1,144,818 is modified in that the multiple groove pulley wheels 11 are driven through an epicyclic gear train adapted to provide fast and slow winding-in speeds and a paying-out speed. This arrangement facilitates the stringing of overhead power lines whereby the trenching beam and ground-engaging stabilizing jacks of the parent Specification are omitted and pivotable ground-engaging sprags 42 and a jockey wheel 40 are mounted on the trailer 1. The epicyclic gear unit comprises a cylindrical casing 51 rotatably mounted on a pair of coaxial torque sleeves, and rotatably driven from engine 18 and clutch 19 through chains 45, 49 and sprockets on the clutch output, on a layshaft 47 and on the easing 51. The casing mounts at least one planetary shaft rotatably supporting three axially coupled gears, the centre one of which meshes with a sun-wheel rigid with an output shaft rotatable within the torque sleeves. Each of the other two planetary gears meshes with a gear on opposite torque sleeves, the ratio between the gear sizes being chosen so that depending on which sleeve is held stationary a reduced forward or reverse drive from the wheels 11 is obtained. With one sleeve clutched to the casing 51, the unit locks and gives a direct drive (i.e. fast winding in speed).
