Abstract

1315018 Winches MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO KK 16 Oct 1970 [18 Oct 1969] 49365/70 Heading B8B An apparatus for balancing tensions in a pair of mooring lines extending from winding drums D on a ship comprises a differential gear arrangement G coupling the two drums together whereby cable payout from one drum due to increased tension in the cable causes the other drum to wind in cable until the tensions are balanced. The drums are driven by a motor E driving a planet gear carrier of the gear G, the carrier having pairs of circumferentially spaced shafts with planet gears at each end whereby the planet gears at one end of each of a pair of shafts mesh with each other and the gears at the other ends each mesh with one of the sun gears integral with the drums. The line tensions are automatically balanced whether or not the drums are driven. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown) the lines from the drums of the balance apparatus extend around sheaves on shore and back to further winding drums on the ship.
