Abstract

1502174 Tensioning winding apparatus BRITISH ROPEWAY ENG CO Ltd 6 July 1976 [1 Dec 1975] 49225/75 Heading B8B A rope winch for moving a load 23 comprises two barrels 10, 11 connected to two shafts 12, 13 which are coupled together through a rotatable carrier 15 of a differential gear 14, so that if the carrier 15 is locked, the barrels simultaneously rotate in opposite directions with one barrel winding in rope and the other barrel paying rope out, drive means 18 for driving the barrel onto which rope is to be wound, and a weight 16 for applying a substantially constant torque to the carrier 15. The torque applied to the carrier 15 by the weight 16 applies a substantially constant tension to both ends of the rope 20 by biasing both barrels in a rope winding-on direction. The drive means 18 is selectively coupled to either barrel to wind rope on to that barrel whereby rope is pulled off the other barrel against the said constant tension, thereby eliminating any slack in the rope.
