Abstract
1,011,958. Winding and paying out apparatus. JOHNSON & PHILLIPS Ltd. Aug. 20, 1964 [Aug. 13, 1963], No. 31902/63. Heading B8B. [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for winding up on paying out cable 12 to/from a cable tank 11 in a ship 10 comprises a driven winding drum 15, a hauling off sheave 13, adjustable first coupling means responsive to rotation of the drum in one direction when winding in cable to drive the sheave 13 and second coupling means responsive to rotation of the drum in the other direction when paying out cable to couple the sheave 13 to an adjustable braking means, the first coupling braking means being adjustable to vary the tension of the cable passing between the drum 15 and the sheave 13. The drum 15 driven by means 20 drives a sprag clutch 37 via the gear train and slip clutch 35 shown in Fig. 2. The sprag clutch 37, during winding in of cable, takes the drive through from the slip clutch 35 to the sheave 13 via gearing 38, 39. Any excessive tension in the cable between the drum 15 and sheave 13 is relieved by the clutch 35 slipping, the point at which slipping occurs being adjustable. During paying out of the cable the drum 15 is reversed and the sprag clutch 37 is disengaged and the sheave 13 is only driven by the cable passing over it. Rotation of the sheave in this direction causes a sprag clutch 41 to engage and couple the sheave to an adjustable friction brake 43 for further tension regulation. Specifications 990,811 and 990,812 are referred to.
