Abstract

1,207,505. Roof hoists; platform elevators. H. C. TAMPIN. 5 Sept., 1968 [22 June, 1967], No. 28763/67. Headings B8B and B8H. A roof hoist comprises a cradle unit 1 mounted on a carriage 2 by bearings 5 in trunnions 6 so that its two jibs 7, 8 can be luffed by two reversing luffing motors 47, 48 driving pinions 49, 50 running on racks 49a, 50a fixed to the carriage 2. Multiple disc brakes are fitted to the motors 47, 48 to lock the cradle unit 1 at the desired angle of luff, limits A and B being shown. The jibs 3, 4 support a cage or platform 9 suspended on cables 10, 11 passing over sheaves 7, 8. The cables 10, 11 are respectively wound on drums 12, 13 carried in bearings 16, 17 on shafts 14, 15 whim have gearwheels 18, 19 in mesh so that the drums 12, 13 rotate in opposite directions at equal speeds. The gear-wheels 18, 19 are driven by reversing electric motors 22, 23 normally operating to gether but, if one fails, the other can be used to raise the cage 9. Each drum 12, 13 has a similar brake, e.g. drum 12 has a brake drum 24 with a brake shoe 26 pivoted at 28 to a lever 30 pivoted at one end 32 to the cradle unit 1. The brake is normally applied by a stack of spring washers 38 on tie rod 34 acting between fixed abutment member 36 and sliding abutment bar 40. During operation of the hoist the brake is held off, so long as electrical power is available, by a solenoid (45), Fig. 5 (not shown), acting through the end of a lever 42 to compress the spring washers 38. There is also a third brake in the form of a disc brake on the shaft of the motor 23. The hoist is controlled from the cage 9 and this is balanced by weights 52. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), provision for slewing is provided by a turn-table (59) mounted between an upper part (2A) and a lower part (2B) of the cradle unit. (For Figures see next page.)
