Abstract

1,168,938. Trans-shipping at sea; winches. MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENCE, CANADIAN GOVERNMENT. 20 May, 1968 [29 May, 1967], No. 23986/68. Headings B8B and B8E. [Also in Division B7] In apparatus for conveying a load 23 from a supply ship 1 to a receiving ship 2 by a self propelled vehicle 17, means are provided for controlling the speed and direction of the vehicle. An electric motor 19 having a drive wheel 18 which engages a " highline " cable 3 is energized by an electric cable 28 connected via a console (not shown) on the supply ship. To avoid the vehicle 17 striking kingposts 5 or 8 under power from the motor 19, limit switches 34, 38 are operable respectively by bulges 31, 35 formed on the cables 3, 28. The switches cause the motor to be cancelled and brakes (not shown) on the vehicle to be applied. For releasing or retrieving the cable 3 as the distance between the ships randomly varies, the cable passes around a ram tensioner 11 to a winch 12. In order to avoid the vehicle striking the kingpost 8 with increased speed relative to the kingpost, due to the winch and ram tensioner taking in cable when the ships are approaching each other at the same time as the vehicle 17 approaches the kingpost, a line-direction sensing transducer 39 automatically cancels the vehicle motor 19 when the vehicle is approaching the kingpost 8 and the cable 3 is being taken in. The motor is allowed to start when the cable is released. Having secured the vehicle 17 to the kingpost 8 by a releasable latch 40 the load 23 is raised from deck level by a motor driven hoist 24 or a vertically slidable block 7. The vehicle, after release then proceeds under control of the console towards the receiving ship 2 until brought to a stop by the action of the switch 34. After unloading, the vehicle returns to the ship 1 subject to the action of the switch 38 and the transducer 39. Tension on the electric cable 28 is maintained by a biased reel 30.
