Abstract

1339131 Winches VICKERS Ltd 6 Aug 1971 [14 May 1970] 23520/70 Heading B8B An apparatus for transferring a load 2 between a stationary platform and a ship's deck 3 movable relative thereto due to wave motion comprises on the platform, a winch drum 16 for a control rope 15 secured to the ship at 17, a winch drum 13 rotationally linked to the drum 16 and on which one end of a main hoist rope 10 is wound, and a further winch drum 11 for the other end of the rope 10, the load 2 being supported from a sheave block 9 supported in a loop of the rope 10, and movement of the ship being superimposed on the hoist rope 10 through the rope 15 and linked drums 16, 13 during lifting and lowering of the load as controlled by the winch drum 11. The drum 13 winds in the rope 10 at twice the rate at which rope 15 is wound on the drum 16, due to either different drum diameters or gearing therebetween. Slack in the cables 10, 15 due to rising of the ship is taken up by the drums 16, 13 driven by motor 19 powered from a high pressure hydraulic accumulator 20, and tension in these cables due to falling of the ship causes the motor 19 to function as a pump to charge the high pressure accumulator 20 from a low pressure accumulator 28. A non-return valve 25 is provided in the circuit of the motor 19 to permit the motor to act as a pump even though it cannot act as a motor due to closure of a valve 26. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) the control rope passes from the control winch to a storage drum and the main hoist rope winch has a brake and is clutchable to the control winch. Also an hydraulic pump is provided as a slow motor drive alternative to the accumulator drive. In the embodiments of Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) the apparatus is mounted on a ship for lowering a diving bell into the sea and the control rope is connected to an anchor resting on the sea bed whereupon the diving bell is maintained a determined distance from the sea bed. The anchor may be supported by a sheave block in a loop of control rope extending between the control winch drum and a further drum for lifting and lowering the anchor.
