Abstract

The height compensation system is for a load which is suspended from a cable with direct mechanical connection. It is used for maintaining a diving bell at a constant height above the bottom of the sea when the survey ship is bobbing up and down as a result of the sea waves. The variation in heights of the ship relative to the bottom of the sea are directly absorbed by a mechanical link between the ship and the bottom of the sea. This is done via a cable or chain which is transmitted mechanically to the connecting element of a suspended load to a ship. The length is compensated so that the stable position of the load is achieved in spite of the movements of the ship. The drive to the hoisting mechanism of the load is designed such that the height compensating system will still function while the load is being raised or lowered.
