Abstract
159,026. Macfarlane, G. T. Nov. 21, 1019. Drum or barrel winding-machines; driving-gear for winding and paying-out apparatus; selfsustaining gear.-Relates to driving-gear for windlasses or capstans and comprises a driving- gear in which a motor running in one direction is connected through reversing-gear to an epicyclic or like clutch capable of sensitive control which is geared to the windlass &c. The motor a drives, through gearing g, a short shaft h connected by bevel-gearing to reversing bevel-wheels clutchable to a shaft l carrying an epicyclic gear t, Fig. 4, which drives a bevel-wheel z geared to a vertical shaft 12 which in turn drives the chain-lifters &c. 17. mounted on the ship's deck, the motor &c. being below the deck. The brake band p is suitably operated to control the epicyclic gear. The chain-lifters 17 are provided with a ratchet device controlled by a ring 20 which is angularly adjustable to put the pawls into or out of action. A brake drum 30, Fig. 8, is mounted on the outer side of each chain-lifter, the brake coils 31 being controlled by loose brake rims 32 to which one end of each coil is fixed. The brake rims can be held by brake-bands 33. This constitutes a selfsustaining gear, since when the coil-brake is hard on the load cannot run back, even when the driving-clutch is disengaged, while when the driving-clutch is engaged the chain-lifter can rotate freely. Another form of self-sustaining gear is also described in which a loose brake rim carries pawls engaging with a ratchet-wheel secured to the chain-lifter. The pawls are linked to blocks sliding with slight friction in grooves in the ratchet-wheel, so that while the chain is being lifted, the pawls are put out of action. A positive connection between the shaft and the chainlifter for driving the latter in either direction can also be effected when desired. For this purpose a member that can slide axially but not rotate on a sleeve keyed to the shaft carries dogs 40 which are capable of engaging the polygonal interior of the drum 30, when operated by a screw through the medium of the hand-levers 45.
