Abstract

907,225. Winches for operating grabs. PRIESTMAN BROS. Ltd. Nov. 16, 1959 [Nov. 26, 1958], No. 38150/58. Class 78 (5). The winch operates the grab through two drums, an opening drum 8 and a hoisting-andclosing drum 12, which are driven by a unidirectional motor via gear 6. The drive is equipped with four clutches 10, 18, 24, 26 of which clutch 10 connects drum 8 to gear 4, clutch 18 connects drum 12 to gear 6, clutch 24 connects drum 12 to gear 22; whilst clutch 26 connects shaft 9 to gear 20 but simultaneously reverses the drive (see later). Drums 8 and 12 are mounted loosely on their shafts. Gear 20 is secured rigidly to drum 8; whilst gears 4 and 6 are secured rigidly to the respective shafts. Operation (Fig. 1).-(1) Hoisting. Clutches 10, 18 are both engaged so that the drums are driven (from gear 6) in opposite directions to wind up the ropes. (ii) Lowering. The weight of the grab rotates both drums. Clutch 24 operates automatically so that the two drums are interconnected by gears 20, 22 which serve to regulate the relative pay-out of the two ropes. (iii) Paying out of ropes when weight of grab is absent. Reversing clutch 26 is engaged. Gear 6 is driven by the motor. The drive to the drum 8 then passes via gear 4, shaft 9, clutch 26, and gear 20 which is solid with drum 8 so that drum 8 pays out its rope. Then drum 8 drives drum 12 via gear 20, gear 22 and clutch 24 to pay out the other rope. Thus the drums are driven simultaneously by the motor to pay out the two ropes. Reversing clutch 26 (Fig. 2).-The drive from shaft 9 passes (via sprockets 32, chains 38, sprockets 40, shaft 44) to gear 50 which is displaceable by the operator to engage gear 56 rigid with gear 20 rigid with drum 8. Clutch 26 therefore drives drum 8 in the opposite direction to the direction in which clutch 10 drives the said drum. A set of stops acts as a safety device to prevent the simultaneous operation of clutch 26 and of clutches 10 and 18. Specification 536,952 is referred to.
