Abstract

407,954. Grab-buckets; cranes; winches. SOENS, E. J., 46, Tennyson Street, Toxteth, Liverpool. July 23, 1932, No. 20792. [Classes 78 (iv) and 78 (v).] Means for excavating, loading, and like purposes, particularly for loading coal from barges &c., comprise a grab with members 1, 2, pivoted to a shaft 13 and connected by links 14 to a spreader 16, a hoisting and closing rope 3 being connected to a drum 19 which acts through ropes 17 to close the grab, and a lowering and opening rope 10 being connected to the spreader 16 ; the ropes 3, 10, pass to a positively driven drum 7 and a frictionally driven drum 11 respectively by way of pulleys 4 on a jib 5 and pulleys 39, 40 on a cross arm 41, whereby the jib is slued in one direction or the other according to which rope is tensioned. The ropes 3, 10, may be interchangeably connected to the grab and the positive and frictional drives of the drums 7, 11 may also be interchanged. As shown, a reversible motor 34 drives through gearing 35 and a slidable pinion 36 a shaft 8 carrying the drums 7, 11 ; levers 27, adjustably pressed by springs 29, are adapted to place friction discs 24, 25, in engagement with the drums 7, 11, for frictional driving, and either disc 24, 25, may be rigidly connected to its drum by bolts 23 for positive driving. A brake 32 is provided for each drum.
