Abstract

240,260. Hingston, W. H., and General Motors, Ltd. July 22, 1924. Vehicle fittings; jib cranes.- To facilitate loading and unloading, a vehicle is provided with a gantry structure 3 which straddles the vehicle platform 2, is movable between the front and rear of the vehicle in channel rails 5, and carries an overhead sheave 15, movable laterally, for the hoisting rope 14. The rails 5 may be provided with end stops which may be removed for withdrawal of the gantry from the vehicle. The gantry is traversed along the vehicle by ropes 8 passing over pulleys 11 and around winding drums 9 at the ends of shaft 10. The drum 17 for the hoisting rope is loose on the shaft 10 and is driven by hand or power from a shaft 21. The traversing drums are keyed on the shaft 10 which is connected with the hoisting drum through a ratchet clutch 25, 26 so that when the gantry is moved, the hoisting drum is rotated to keep the load at constant level, and the tendency of the load to run down is opposed by the tendency of the gantry to run to the front of the vehicle. The shaft 10 may be held by a ratchet clutch 33, 34. The clutch members 33, 26 are pressed outwardly by springs and are controlled by a sliding fork so as to take up three different positions. With both clutches engaged, the traversing drums are held, the hoisting drum may be rotated from the shaft 21 to raise the load, and the load is self-supporting. With the clutch 25, 26 engaged and the clutch 33, 34 free, the load may be traversed in either direction, without rising or falling, by rotating the shaft 21. With the clutch 33, 34 engaged and the clutch 25, 26 free, the traversing drums are held and the load may be lowered under control by a brake. The hoisting mechanism may be used for direct haulage, the rope being led from the drum 17 over a swivelling fair-lead mounted above it. The vertical gantry 12 carrying the guide-sheave 13 may be supported by stays 41 and may be dismountable.
