Abstract

Jib cranes.-To ensure horizontal traverse of the load in luffing, the hoisting and luffing ropes d, f, are led over guide pulleys e, g, on a common axis vertically above the jib foot at a height determined so that the change in the length of rope between the pulley e and the jib head during luffing is one-half of the vertical rise of the jib head, and the hoisting and luffing ropes are wound in opposite directions on barrels d<1>, f<1> of equal effective diameter which are geared together during luffing so that the remaining half of the necessary compensation is obtained by the paying out or winding in of the hoisting rope. The arrangement may be applied to a crane in which a load sheave hangs in a bight of a rope of which the two parts pass to the hoisting and luffing drums respectively. Winding gear which permits of hoisting independently of the level luffing gear is shown in Fig. 2. The luffing drum f<1> is carried by the planet member k of a differential gear l, i<1>, and the hoisting drum d<1> is keyed with the wheel i<1>. For luffing, the wheel l is held by a brake drum p and the drum f is driven by wormgear q, r, driving the drum d<1> at twice the speed. For hoisting, the drum d<1> is driven from the wheel o through the differential gear, the drum f<1> and the planet member being held by the wormgear q, r. A geometrical method is described for finding the position of the guide pulleys e, g, giving their height above the jib-foot as approximately 0.38 of the length of the jib, for level luffing through 50‹ from the vertical, this height varying slightly with the range of luffing provided for.
