Jib cranes.-The jib a of a luffing-crane is balanced bv a weight f which is connected to the jib-head by a rope b led over a pulley c placed over the jib-pivot at a height approximately equal to the length of the jib divided by 3À4. The rope b is wound round the luffing- drum d and is then led over a sheave e to the weight f; or the rope may be attached to the drum d, and a separate rope led off to the weight. The object is to counterbalance the jib in all positions.
