Abstract
562,517. Jib cranes. SHOOSMITH, G. T., and CLARKE, CHAPMAN & CO., Ltd. Jan. 20,1943, No. 1011.. [Class 78 (iv)] A luffing crane has its jib k and pivot kx so arranged in relation to the mast or post a that the jib can be luffed about its pivot through an arc extending on each side of the vertical plane containing the pivot and the jib when the latter is at its highest position, the head l of the jib travelling in a plane which is clear of the post a. During the luffing movement the load travels in the path indicated by broken lines in Figs. 1 and 3. In order to give a fair lead to the hoisting rope n during the luffing movement it is passed over a pulley j carried by a swivelling fork i and over a jib-head pulley m carried by a swivelling fork l, the two forks being connected together by telescopic lihks o, o<1> so that the pulleys j, m are always in the same plane as one another, the swivelling movement of the forks permitting this. In order to secure level luffing, the hoisting rope n passes from the winding drum y over a slidable sheave w, a sheave u which may be fixed or connected to weighing gear v, as shown, and over the sheaves j, m; the sheave w is mounted in a bridle z connected by a rope 1, passing over sheaves 2, 3, j<1>, to a member p' of the rod o<1> secured to the jib-head fork l. In the construction shown the distance between the jib pivot kx and the sheaves j, j<1> is about one-third of the length of the jib. The jib is balanced by a weight rand is luffed by means of a motor-driven pinion t engaging a toothed sector s on the jib. Alternatively, the jib may be luffed by crank-gear, ropes, or hydraulic means. The crane post a rotates in a roller ring e and is slewed by a motordriven pinion engaging a gear-wheel f on the post.
