Abstract

586,438. Safe-load indicators for cranes. AITKEN, R. L., JAMES, R. T., and HAUSSER, P. C. G. March 20,1944, No. 5188. [Class 78 (iv)] A safe-load indicator for cranes comprises a member pivotally mounted on a part of the crane, means for so applying the tension in the hoist rope and/or luffing cable to said member as to impart thereto opposed turning moments and so that the difference between said moments for a constant load varies with the different angles of the jib of the crane, by reason inter alia of a resulting change in the length of at least one of the moment arms, whereby danger conditions are indicated for any angle of the jib when said member is deflected by a predetermined amount from a datum position. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the fall 15 of the hoist rope 13 passes around a pulley 17 on a lever 18 pivotally mounted at 19 on the jib 10 and is anchored to a lever 20 which is pivoted at 21 to the jib and connected by a link 23 to the lever 18. The difference between the turning moments on the lever 18 is balanced by a spring-controlled indicator 26. In Fig. 2, the lever 18 is mounted on the spindle 27 of the jib pulley 11 and the fall 15 passes over the pulley 17 and over a pulley 28 on the jib to the lever 18. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the pulleys 17, 28 are replaced by tracks 29, 30 secured to the lever 18 and jib 10, respectively, over which runs a roller chain 12 forming an extension of the fall 15. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the pulley 11 is mounted on the lever 18 and the fall 15 passes over a pulley 32 on the jib to this lever. In a modification, Fig. 5, the fall 15 is anchored direct to the jib 10 and the hoist rope 13 passes over a pulley 31 on the lever 18. Fig. 6 shows a modification of Fig. 1 wherein the indicator is controlled by the luffing cable 24, whilst in Fig. 7 control is effected through both the luffing and hoisting cables.
