Abstract

686,177. Jib cranes. RANSOMES & RAPIER, Ltd., and STOKES, A. S. Sept. 15, 1950. [Sept. 26, 1949] No. 24697/49. Class 78 (iv). Luffing. A single luffing rope 24 controls the movements of the jib 12 about its heel pivot 14 and of an extension 16 about a hinge 18 on the jib. The rope 24 passes from a drum 50, around pairs of pulleys on the shaft 48 and on a shaft 46 carried by the jib 12, and around pulleys on shafts 26 and 32 carried respectively by the jib 12 and by the extension 16 and is dead-ended to the shaft 26. Inward luffing movement of the jib 12 is limited by a stop 52. The balance of the system is such that the jib 12 is held on its stop 52 while the extension is lowered from its uppermost position as shown in full lines in Fig. 2 to the broken line position. The jib and extension are then connected for movement together by engagement of a cross-bar 58 secured to guys 54 on the extension with the end of slots 60 on the jib. When the extension has reached the horizontal it is restrained against further downward rotation by engagement of a further cross bar 84, carried by guys 82 on the extension, with a fixed stop 86: the main jib may be further lowered with the extension horizontal. The relative movement of the extension 16 and the jib 12 may be prevented or reduced by a catch 80 which may be moved to obstruct the movement of the cross-bar 58 in the slot 60. The extension may, as an alternative to the arrangement shown, move with the jib during the initial derricking out and alone subsequently. Balancing. To compensate for the variation in the ratio of the forces required to support the extension and the main jib under varying loads, the hoisting rope 62 is led from the winch 64 over guide pulleys 66 and 67, Fig. 3, around a pulley 68 on the shaft 32 near the heel of the extension, around a pulley 70 on the shaft 26 carried by the main jib and over a further pulley 72 on the shaft 32 to the jib-end pulley at the end of the extension. Specification 470,295 is referred to.
