Abstract

1,215,798. Jib cranes. HARNISCHFEGER CORP. 22 July, 1969 [25 July, 1968], No. 36678/69. Heading B8B. A crane boom B comprises telescopic base, intermediate, third and fourth sections 10, 12, 14, 16. The base section 10 is pivotally mounted for luffing and the boom B is supported by a cable system S extending between the boom tip 25 and a winch (not shown) on the crane frame. The system S comprises line 29a from the winch to pulley 30 and portions of cables 50, 52, 54 which form suspension cables respectively anchored adjacent the rear ends of boom sections 12, 14, 16 at points 12a, 14a, 16a after passing around sheaves 40, 42, 44. The cables 50, 52 are respectively anchored on pulleys 32, 34 after passing around pulleys 30, 32. The cable 54 is anchored at point 25. This arrange ment provides a compensating system when the boom B is extended. The suspension cables 50, 52, 54 can be individually changed in length for a particular crane design to vary the offset of the pulleys 30, 32, 34 from the sheaves 40, 42, 44 selectively to adjust the supporting effect of a suspension cable on its associated boom section as shown in Fig. 5. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), an extra fall is provided between the pulleys 30, 32; 32, 34; 34, 36 by passing the cables 50, 52, 54 around the pulleys 32, 34, 36 and anchoring them on the pulleys 30, 32, 34.
