Abstract

Jib cranes.-Approximately horizontal traverse of the load during luffing is secured by passing the hoisting-rope l from the winding-drum over the head-sheave f to the load-sheave l<1>, back over the head-sheave, and round a system of fixed and movable pulleys, the movable pulleys d being slidable along the jib and connected to a link j pivoted to the crane post at a point k vertically above the jib pivot. The distance mk between the pivots of the jib and the link is determined by the ratio of purchase in the pulley system. The jib is luffed by a rope either fastened to the jib-head or passing over a sheave at the jib-head to the movable pulleys. The jib is balanced by a weight, which may be carried on an extension of the link j beyond its pivot, or may be fixed on the free end of the luffing-rope after it has been wound on the luffing-drum. The hoisting-rope may be double.
