Abstract
13,213. Bullivant, W. P., and Vallance, B. June 7. Rope railways.-Comprises arrangements of overhead ropeways or railways in which traversing and raising and lowering may be effected either separately or simultaneously. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the carriage 4 runs upon a ropeway 1 and can be arrested when hoisting by a brake 20 operated by an endless cable 21. The carriage has differential pulleys 17, 18, either constituted by pulleys of different sizes or by pulleys of the same size geared together, around which passes a combined traversing and hoisting rope 19, the ends of which are wound round drums 13, 7 mounted loosely on a common shaft. The drums are rotated at equal speeds when the carriage 4 is traversed, and differentially in a ratio corresponding to the sizes of, or gearing between, the pulleys 17, 18 when the load is raised or lowered. Or the drums may be driven so as to effect traversing and hoisting simultaneously. In a modification, the traversing is effected by an endless cable or its equivalent, the traversing-drum 13 being replaced by a sheave, and the hoisting-rope being passed from the drum 7 over a pulley on the carriage to a suspended pulley carrying the load and fastened by its end to the carriage. In a further modification, the hoisting-cable is also endless or the equivalent of endless. In this case, the drum 7 is replaced by a sheave and the hoisting-rope passes from the load up round one of the differential pulleys to the sheave 7, and its other end is wound round and attached to the other differential pulley.
