Abstract
12,277. Alexander, W., and Applebys, Ltd. June 5. Cranes; lifting-gear for rope railways.-A hoisting or lowering and traversing device has, in addition to a traveller, one or more sheave-carriers traversible in the same direction as the traveller and acted upon in opposite directions by hoisting and traversing cables, whereby the hoisting-cable need not span more than half the distance between the end of the trackway and the traveller. Fig. 1 shows the load a, hoisting-rope b, and a sheavecarrier c mounted between one end of the overhead track d and the traveller e. The hoisting-rope b passes over the sheave f on the traveller, the sheave g on the carrier, and a fixed sheave h to the hoisting-drum i. The traversing-rope k is wound in opposite directions on the drum o, and one part passes over a sheave m and is fixed to the traveller, while the other part passes over the sheave q and a sheave r on the carrier and is then fixed to the track. If the winch i is operated, the winch o being held, the load is lifted or lowered ; if the winch o is operated, the winch i being held, the traveller is hauled along the track, the load remaining at the same height. If the hoisting-rope is likely to become slack at any time, the relative positions of the traveller and carrier may be maintained by a spacing-rope s fixed to the traveller and passing over a sheave on the carrier to a fixed point t of the structure, or over a pulley to a balance weight v. The rope p, instead of being anchored to the end of the track, may be made endless with the spacing-rope s, it being carried round a sheave 7 and attached to a clamp 8. A modification shows the invention applied to a double-rope grab, in which the opening-rope is passed round a sheave on the traveller and over a sheave on the carrier on the same axis as the sheave g to a spring drum or the equivalent. In a second modification, shown in Fig. 3, two carriers are arranged, one on each side of the traveller, each having only one sheave over which the hoisting and opening ropes of the grab respectively pass. A third modification consists in using the same motor to drive both the hoisting-rope drum and the opening-rope drum through the intermediary of epicyclic gearing. In a fourth modification, the traversing and hoisting drums are operated by the same motor as in the last case. More than one motor may be used in connexion with the different drums &c.
