Abstract
1007. Mitchell, A. H., and Williams, A. S. Jan. 13. Cranes.-Overhead travellers are provided with means whereby the load is carried in a horizontal line and is prevented from swinging during its travel and when starting and stopping. Togglelevers. d, d<1> are linked to the carriage b and to the frame a. The two hoisting - ropes pass from sheaves h<2> round double sheaves e, e<1>, e<2> carried at the joints of the toggle links to a double sheave c<2> on the carriage, whence one branch h is directly connected to the load while the other branch h<1> passes round a sheave C<1> at the far end of the carriage and thence to the load. The carriage is projected by a rope f passing round an end sheave f<1>. The return run of the carriage is effected by the weight of the toggles which assume the position shown in dotted lines. In an alternative arrangement, the toggles bend upward, and a rope is provided for effecting the return of the traveller. The toggles have such relation to the length of the traverse that the lifting-chain will be taken up or given out to the extent required to maintain the load at the same height.
