Abstract

4839. Chase, C. March 3. Grabs.-Relates to improvements in double-rope grab-buckets and consists of means whereby the grab-bucket may hang from a support in a closed position leaving the hoisting-rope and dumping- rope free for other uses. In a common form of grab-bucket, two jaws 1, 2 are mounted on a shaft 3 and connected to a head member 4 by links 5, 6. Keyed to the shaft 3 is a sheave 7 which has fixed thereto a hoisting-rope 8 leading over a sheave 9 in the head to some pulley or block overhead. A guide-shell 13 is mounted upon the shaft 3 and is operatively connected to the jaw 2 by a bar 14. The dumping-rope 10 is made fast to a ring 11 in the head while chains 12 made fast to the head and to the shaft 3 are wound around the shaft 3 in a direction opposite to that of the hoisting-fall 8 over the sheave 9. The present invention consists essentially in the application of a bail 20 constructed of two side portions 21 movably secured to guides on the head 4 and extending upwards, the top end portions having a connecting-bar 22 to be moved into and out of engagement with any suitable supporting-member such as a hook 23, the lower end portions being mounted rotatively on the shaft 3. The hoisting-rope 8 may pass through an opening in the bar 22. When the bucket is sustained by the bail 20 and hook 23, the hoisting and dumping ropes are idle and may be used for other purposes, as, for example, traversing along a suitable platform a carriage which supports the grab-bucket.
