Abstract

5287. Sieurin, P. W. March 9. Winches. - In a winch comprising two drums mounted on a single shaft and driven independently in the same direction from a countershaft through gearing which may be put into or out of action by clutches, mechanism is provided whereby the drums are connected so as to be driven in opposite directions when one of the clutches is disengaged. Fig. 1 shows one arrangement in which drums 9, 13 are driven.from a shaft 17 through clutches 20, 21. The clutches 20, 21 are connected to a vertical rod 24 by links 22, 23. The rod 24 is connected to one arm of a pivoted lever 25, the other arm of which engages the collar of a friction level 27 sliding on a spindle 26. When one of the clutches is disengaged, the friction bevel is forced down by the linkage to engage conical friction surfaces formed on the drums, which then move in opposite directions. In a modification, an endless rope passes round sheaves on the drums, and round a sheave mounted on a swinging lever actuated from the clutches. The winch is adapted for use with apparatus for hoisting and transporting loads.
