Abstract
18,540. Gill, R. Aug. 12. Jib cranes.-Comprises a jib crane in which the load moves in an horizontal path during luffing. The hoisting rope 15 passes from the jib-head pulley over a movable pulley 14 to the winding-drum 21. The pulley 14 moves in guides along an inclined track 6, and its spindle is connected to the jib by ropes 10 passing over a fixed pulley 9, so that when the jib is luffed the pulley 14 is moved to pay out or take in the hoisting-line. The jib is luffed by a motor 19 through toothed gearing and a quadrant 16 fixed to the jib, and the jib is balanced at 5. Slueing gear is provided If the track 6 is straight, the path of the load is only approximately horizontal, but the track may be curved to give a strictly horizontal patch ; or the inclination and curvature of the track may be varied to cause the load to move in any desired way. A method of determining the position of the track 6 by means of a series of ellipses is described in the Specification. In a modification, the ropes 10 pass from the jib to a motor-controlled drum, on which other ropes connected to the pulley 14 are wound in the opposite direction, so that as the motor rotates the drum to luff the jib through the ropes 10, the pulley 14 is simultaneously operated. In this case the jib may be counterbalanced by a weight connected to the pulley 14.
