Abstract

270,856. Souness, T. March 11, 1926. Jib cranes.-To ensure horizontal travel of the load in luffing, the load rope 4 is reeved around a jib-head sheave 7 and a compensating sheave 9 whose position is controlled by ropes 11 passing round cams 12. As shown, the load rope passes around the pulleys 7, 9, 7, and a pulley 6 on the axis of the jib, and thence to the hoisting drum 5. The cams 12 are mounted on shafts 13 carrying pinions 14 which mesh with racks 15 on the frame so as to make one complete, revolution as the jib is luffed through its full range. In a modification, the cam 12 is mounted to rotate on the axis of the jib and is geared to the luffing mechanism. The invention is particularly applicable to cranes with bifurcated jib straddling the revolving structure or cabin 3<1>. Luffing mechanism for this type of crane comprises a rotating crank 18, Fig. 3, with a roller or slider 17 on the crank-pin engaging slotted guides 16 which are secured to the tail of the jib.
