Abstract

503,100. Jib cranes. LAINE, N. Oct. 7, 1937, No. 27303. [Class 78 (iv)] In the lover-luffing of cranes, in which a compensating movement is applied to the lifting-rope at or near its driving-point, a flexible member is employed which extends between a point movable with the jib and a curved member on the frame, so that the variation in length from the point on the jib to the point of contact with the curved member is proportional to the necessary compensating movement, such variation being imparted by transmission mechanism to the lifting- gear. Fig. 4 shows one construction in which a flexible member 1, connected to a point a<3> on the jib tail, is passed round a curve formed of rollers 2 on the framing before passing round the guide pulley 3 to differential-gear as set out below. In a modification the rollers 2 are replaced by a pulley under which the rope 1 passes. This pulley 4, Fig. 7, is rotated when the jib is luffed and imparts a compensating movement to the lifting-drum 16 by driving the planet pinions 14 through the gearing 10, 11. The hoisting-drum is connected to the ring 15, and the sun-wheel 18 is fixed during the luffing-operation. Various other modifications are described in which the flexible member engages the. main arm of the jib. Fig. 11 is one example in which the flexible member 1 connected to the jib at a<2> passes over the curved surface represented by the pulley 4. Another modification is suitable for jibs operated by fluid-pressure rams.
