Abstract

405,377. Jib cranes; winches. JONES & CO., Ltd., T. C., and CUBITT, E. R. Y., 93, Wood Lane, Shepherd's Bush, London. Sept. 10, 1932, No. 25286. [Classes 78 (iv) and 78 (v).] In a slueing crane with engine and winch movable about a pillar on the carriage, such as is used for lifting spoil from a trench, the winch is controlled by a single lever 5 extending forwardly in the direction of the outer end of the jib to enable the operator to stand close to the hoisting rope with one hand free. The lever 5 is movable in one plane to operate the brake and in another plane to control the driving gear. As shown, the brake band 1 is applied by a spring 3 and released by moving the hand-lever 5 vertically about the pivot 7. The pivot 7 is carried by an arm 8 on a sleeve 9, the inner end of the lever 5 working within a slot in the sleeve. Horizontal movement of the lever 5 swings the arm 8 so as to move the shaft 13 axially bringing the driving pinion 14 into or out of gear with the spur-wheel on the winch drum and moving fast and loose pulleys across the line of the driving belt. The shaft 13 is normally held by a spring in the non-driving position, and a separate hand-driving gear may be connected to the spur-wheel on the winch drum. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the horizontal movement of the control lever 5 turns a sleeve on the drum shaft so as to clutch the driving-wheel to the winch drum.
