Abstract

630,711. Jib-cranes. K. & L. STEELFOUNDERS & ENGINEERS, Ltd., and SHAW, C. S. March 13, 1947, No. 6985. [Class 78 (iv)] In a mobile crane, the travelling and slewing movements are effected by a common driving mechanism which is operatively associated with a slidably mounted connecting device so arranged that in one position it connects said driving mechanism to the slewing mechanism whilst in another position it connects said driving mechanism to the travelling mechanism. In the embodiment shown, the crane, mounted on a carriage 1, is provided with a driving mechanism comprising an engine or motor connected by clutches 4 and reduction gearing 5, 6, 7 with a spur pinion 8 on a slidably mounted shaft 10. With the shaft 10 in its upper position, the pinion engages a slewing ring 9, whilst in the lower position it disengages from the ring and engages a clutch 15 connected to a shaft 16 on which is mounted a gear 17 which drives the road wheels 22 through a bevel gear 23. The crane is prevented from travelling out of control when the pinion engages the slewing ring by a spring-controlled sprag 18 having a projection 25 engaging teeth 19 integral with the gear 17. When the pinion is moved down to engage the clutch 15, it pushes down a rod 21 which depresses the end 26 of the sprag to disengage the projection 25 from the gear 17.
