Abstract
633,901. Operating ratchet clutches. NICHOLSON, A. C. Aug. 7, 1947, No. 21529. [Class 80 (ii)] A ratchet clutch particularly for driving mechanism on an agricultural implement from one of the wheels thereof is adapted to be put into and out of operation by successive operations of a control member from a remote point. The driven member 8 has ratchet teeth 9 co-operating with a pawl 14 on a driving member 10 secured to a wheel 13. A disc 11 is mounted for relative rotation with respect to the disc 10 and has two pegs 35 thereon for co-operation with either a notch 40 in the tail piece 16 of pawl 14 or a notch 41 in another pawl 36 carried by the disc 10. The disc 11 has also four projections 24 on its periphery for co-operation with a control member 7 and partially masked by a cam portion 25 on the disc 10 with a recessed portion and cam slopes 32, 33. As shown in Fig. 3 the pawl 14 is engaged with the ratchet wheel 9 so that the drive from the wheel 13 is effective in one direction and the disc 11 is carried around with the disc 10 by the engagement of a peg 35 with the pawl 36. If the control member 7 is operated to a position shown in full lines it rides down the slope 32 of cam 25 and engages a projection 24 of the disc 11 and effects a relative rotation of the disc 11 with respect to the disc 10 until it is lifted by the cam slope 33. This results in the disengagement of the peg 35 from the pawl 36 and its engagement with the notch 40 of pawl 14 to lift and hold this pawl out of engagement with the teeth 9 and so stop the drive from wheel 13, the control member 7 being released and returned to the dotted line position. On a further operation of the member 7 it is moved to engage another projection 24 and to cause the one peg 35 to release pawl 14 to the other peg 35 to engage pawl 36 so that the drive is resumed. In a modified arrangement a further separate holding pawl is provided for holding the disc 11 in a position in which the main pawl 14 is disengaged instead of this operation being effected by the engagement of a peg 35 with the notch 40 of pawl 14.
