[Class 80 (iv)] A pawl a for engagement with the teeth q of a wheel n is provided with a resilient arm in the form of a spring e secured to an arm h of the pawl and having a portion d adapted to .engage the ratchet teeth q to hold the pawl a clear of the teeth for rotation of the wheel in the direction of the arrow but to be engaged by the teeth to move the pawl a into engagement on attempted rotation in the opposite direction. The invention is particularly applicable to the control of elements of epicyclic variable speed gears such as described in Specifications 439,828, 439,855 and 480,401.
