Abstract

1,119,801. Friction clutches and combinations. BENFORD Ltd. 22 Nov., 1965 [2 Oct., 1964; 5 Feb., 1965; 8 July, 1965,] Nos. 40092/64, 5013/65 and 28920/65. Heading F2C. [Also in Division B8] To actuate a winch 82 of a builder's hoist one of operating handles 122, 122a is moved such that a link 125 is moved to the left and a clutch element 88 is moved to the right to engage a projection 96 in an end loop 95 of a spring 91. Rotation of the element 88 by a shaft 81 contracts the spring which grips a flange 98 on a driven member 97 and couples it to the driven flange 83 of the winch 82 to which the opposite end of the spring is attached by a peg 93. Also attached to the winch 82 is a sleeve 99, which is connected to a shaft 102 rotating in the opposite direction to the shaft 81 by a freewheel device 100. Whilst the winch is being rotated by the spring 91, the freewheel is freewheeling. When the winch 82 is to be rotated in the opposite direction, the member 88 is moved to the left by the lever 125 and, after a brake 107 has been released, the winch turns due to gravity on the load, and is restrained by the driven shaft 102 and the freewheel 100. In a second embodiment, Fig. 9 (not shown), shafts 81, 102 rotate in opposite directions as described above and clutch plates 153 or 154, with linings 155, 156 are urged into engagement with side plates 83 or 84 of the winch drum depending on which way the winch is to be rotated, by sliding wedges 163, 164 and rockers 160, 161. The latter carry adjusting bolts 167,168.
