Abstract

293,227. Morris Motors (1926), Ltd., Woollard, F. G., Pendrell, A. G., and Thomas, W. J. Aug. 31, 1927. Tension arrangements. - In chaintensioning devices for use with motorÀcycle engine chains &c., a tensioning-sprocket d rotates freely on a drum c carried eccentrically upon a stationary stud a to which it is connected by a torsion spring g, the tension being maintained by a ratchet detent, in which inclined teeth on the drum engage similar teeth i on a plate h splined on the stud a. Ratchet engagement is maintained by a spring j, which is of the torsion type if play is provided in the spline connection to permit the drum c to accommodate itself to irregularities in the working of the chain. In order to facilitate dismantling of the chain, a cam lever m is pivoted in a cap l secured to the plate h, so that the cam may be turned to abut upon the stud end and disengage the plate from the drum c. A removable cover-piece (not shown) for the lever m may be provided, the parts being so shaped that the cover-piece cannot be replaced unless the plate h is in active position. The ratchetreleasing device may be so modified as to move the drum c axially for disengagement.
