Abstract

348,939. Tensioning driving-chains. MORSE, F. L., Ithaca, New York, U.S.A. June 28, 1930, No. 19684. [Class 80 (i).] In means for automatically tensioning driving-chains without affecting the phase relation of the sprocket wheels, applicable to cam-shaft drives of internalcombustion engines, a pair of jockey-wheels 10, 11 are carried on a pivoted arm 12 and pressed against the chain 9, interconnecting the driving and driven wheels 5, 8, by a spiral or other spring 14, or weight or other pressure means. A ratchet detent 13 may maintain the tension, and the driving effort of the chain may act to assist or oppose the spring action. The wheel 10 may drive through an auxiliary chain 18 a fan 15 which may be pivoted concentrically with the arm, or, as shown, eccentrically so that tension on the chain 18 is increased as the arm 12 moves to take up the slack on the chain 9.
