Abstract

316,051. Morse, F. L. Sept. 21, 1928. Tension-arrangements.-In means for automatically maintaining a constant tension upon driving-chains, for example in automobile camshaft drives, a tensioning sprocket (not shown) is mounted to turn loosely on an eccentric, lever, or the like 9 which is loose on a fixed pin 10 and is secured to an eccentric 14 to which is secured a strap 24, the other end 23 of which is adjustably inserted in one of a series of slots 22 in a drum 21 connected to a fixed pin 16 by a spiral or other spring 13. The pin 16 is carried on an arm 17 adjustably clamped upon the pin 10. The throw of the eccentrics is so arranged that change in the leverage of the eccentric 9, as the driving- chain stretches, and change in the pull of the spring 13 upon the strap 24 are compensated for by change in the leverage of the strap 24 about the pin 10, the eccentric 14 being, if necessary, made cam-shaped for this purpose. A pawl 26 and a ratchet-wheel 25 rigid with the eccentrics 9, 14 and concentric with the pin 10 are provided to maintain the tension. In a modification, the drum 21 may be arranged eccentrically to the pin 16 and the eccentric 14 despensed with. The sprocket-wheel may replace one of the existing sprocket-wheels in an automobile front drive, in which case a coupling would be introduced between the wheel and its shaft to permit the necessary movement of the wheel.
