Abstract

675,633. Clutches. SALOMON, F. M. M. B. Sept. 4, 1950 [Sept. 3, 1949; March 18, 1950; June 3, 1950], No. 21764/50. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group XXXIV] An inertia disc 17, Fig. 1, is frictionally carried by a tiltable hub 14 secured on a transverse pin 12 pivoted in a sleeve 11 forming an extension of a driving shaft 1, the pin 12 having a cam surface E cooperating with a projection F on a member G slidable in the sleeve 11 and connected by a pin H to the clutch-operating collar I of a plate clutch M disposed between the sleeve 11 and a driven shaft 2. Disc 17 normally rotates with hub 14 and, due to the inertia forces, tends to move clockwise into a position normal to the sleeve 11, thus moving collar I to the right to cause the clutch to engage against the action of disengaging springs U, this action taking place above a predetermined speed. To produce disengagement, disc 17 is braked by application thereto of a brake shoe A, whereupon the inertia forces are reduced sufficiently to allow the springs U to disengage the clutch. In the construction shown in Fig. 9, the inertia member 17a, 17b carries pins 30 engaging guides 31 on a disc 32 to which a brake band 33 is applied for disengagement of the clutch; while a cam member 50, fixed to hub 14, co-operates with a roller 51 on the clutch-operating sleeve 21 to cause engagement of the clutch. Alternatively, the member 17a, 17b may be pivotally mounted in a gimbal ring itself pivoted in a ring adapted to be braked, and the hub 14 may carry a pin pivotally carrying an eccentric engaging a recess in the clutch-operating sleeve to cause clutch engagement. To enable shaft 2 to drive shaft 1, when required, a one-way clutch may be arranged between the shafts 1 and 2 so that shaft 2 can drive shaft 1 directly; or oppositely-acting one-way clutches may be arranged between shaft 1 and sleeve 11 and between sleeve 11 and shaft 2, so that sleeve 11 is driven by either shaft and either shaft can drive the other through the clutch; or, as shown in Fig. 9, a member 67 secured to shaft 2 has ratchet teeth co-operating with complementary teeth on a loose pulley 69, so that, by applying a brake band 70 to the pulley 69, the latter is cammed to the left and, through a collar 72 and push rods 73, moves the sleeve 21 to the left to engage the clutch. The clutch may be electromagnetically- or fluidoperated.
