A toy vehicle comprises a carden shaft driven by a motor which may propel the toy and also rotate an auxiliary member, the drive from the carden shaft to the auxiliary member being controllable by hand operated means. In a toy tipping lorry, a clockwork or electric motor 5 drives carden shaft members 13, 18, and longitudinal movement of shaft member 18 by a hand lever 21 permits engagement of a gear 30 on the shaft 18 with a gear 33 on a drum 34 to be controlled. As shown, gears 30, 33 are engaged, and a spindle 48 is moved longitudinally by the rotation of the drum 34, a threaded portion 47 of the spindle 48 coacting with an internal thread formed in a sleeve 35 secured in the drum, and the body 54 being raised or lowered according to the direction of rotation of the drum. The forward end of carden shaft member 13 is movable vertically by means of a hand lever 22, and a pinion 12 is thus engageable with driving gears 10, 11 or may be set to a middle free position. Forward, reverse, neutral, and a change of gear ratio are thus provided. A further two-speed gear is provided for the rear axle drive, gears 32 and 45 or gears 42 and 44 being engaged when the shaft member 18 is moved to disengage the drum driving gears 30, 33. A spring type friction drive provided between the gears 30, 32 enables the drum 34 to be rotated by a handle through bevel gears 36, 37 and prevents power from the motor damaging drive members in the event of a stoppage at the drum or associated parts. A modification (Fig. 8, not shown) includes a representation of a breakdown hoist, a "cable" being wound on the drum and having a hook at its free end. The gears 30, 33 may be replaced by a friction drive and the toy is adapted to be dismantled and re-assembled.
