Abstract

977,582. Hydraulic clutches; variable-speed gear. K. KRAEMER. Aug. 13, 1963 [Aug. 31, 1962], No. 31888/63. Headings F2C and F2D. An hydraulic clutch for motor cars &c. comprises an input shaft 11 fast with a carrier 17 formed with recesses 18 in which are journalled planet pinions 21 meshing a sun gear 23 fast on an output shaft 13, liquid 28 within a gearcase 10 entering the carrier through an inlet 27 and passages 29 which lead to the recesses and being pumped by the planet pinions through vent passages 33 to a common exhaust duct 34, in turn connected through a gland 40 to a pipe 31 variably throttled by a valve 32. The inlet 27 &c. also admits liquid to recesses 19 in the carrier-containing planet pinions 22 meshing a sun gear 24 integral with a sleeve shaft 25 journalled about the output shaft 13 fast with a sun gear 73. The second set of planet pinions 22 pump liquid through vent passages 42, 43 and the gland 40 to a second pipe 41, also adjustably throttled by the valve 32, to establish drive to the sun gear 73. Planet pinions 72 in a carrier 61 mesh the sun gear 73 and a ring gear 69, a one-way sprag detent 76 connecting the ring gear to a surrounding brake drum 59. A non-rotary detent hub 57 and a positive clutch hub 64 are slidden simultaneously left or right from the neutral position shown by actuation of a single control 54. To obtain a step-down forward drive from the sun gear 73 to the output shaft 13, the detent hub 57 is slidden leftwards to engage teeth 58 on the surrounding brake drum 59 so that the latter is stationed and, through the one-way detent 76, stations the ring gear 69, the clutch hub 64 being simultaneously slidden into mesh with teeth 67 on the carrier 61. To obtain a stepdown reverse drive from the sun gear 73 to the output shaft 13, the detent hub 57 is slidden into mesh with teeth 60 on the carrier 61 and the clutch hub 64 is slidden into mesh with teeth 68 on the ring gear 69. In operation, take-up of forward drive is effected by the valve 32, which first closes the pipe 41 to establish drive through the planet pinions 22, the sun gear 73, the planet pinions 72, the carrier 61 &c., further movement of the valve closing the pipe 31 and establishing direct drive to the output shaft 13. The valve 32 may be actuated manually, or automatically by means not further described.
