Abstract

1401630 Winch drive HAMWORTHY ENG Ltd 4 Dec 1972 [2 Dec 1971 30 March 1972] 56041/71 and 15005/72 Heading B8B [Also in Division F2] Driving means for a winch barrel 1 comprises epicyclic gearing having a sun gear 7 on a driving shaft 4, a ring gear 10 secured to the barrel 1 and planet pinions 8 journalled in a planet carrier 9 which is splined to a shaft 11 which may be braked by a brake located in a housing 12. The brake is normally held by springs and is adapted to be released by hydraulie means to permit free fall of the load. Alternatively, the drive input may be by way of the planet carrier, and the sun gear may constitute the braked member. An hydraulic fluid circuit for releasing the brake comprises a supply pump 3, a flow regulating and pressure release unit 4, a manually operable control valve 5 and an actuator 2 to which hydraulic pressure is applied in order to release the brake. The degree of closure of the control valve 5 adjusts the speed of free fall by varying the pressure at the brake actuator 2. A metering pump 7 is coupled to the planet carrier and this produces a negative feedback which maintains the winch speed substantially constant at a value depending on the setting of the control valve 5. For emergency free fall, a manually operable selector valve 8 is provided.
