Abstract

986,069. Variable-ratio gearing. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Dec. 27, 1962 [Jan. 18, 1962], No. 48630/62. Headings F2C and F2D. A variable-ratio transmission for a vehicle comprises a two-ratio and reverse epicyclic gear 16 following a hydrodynamic torque converter comprising a pump 18 having variable-inclination blades 116 at its outlet end. The blades 116 are mounted on pins 112 having offset ends received in a groove 118 formed in a piston 96 which is mounted in an annular cylinder 94 which is fixed to the inner shroud 26 of the pump. The blades 116 are biased to a low-angle position by the pressure in the converter, and are moved to a high-angle position by admitting pressure to the cylinder 94 under the control of a valve 172 which in turn is actuated by pressure generated by an input driven pump 52 when the vehicle accelerator pedal 184 is near its maximum depression, the pressure of the input driven pump 52 acting on the valve 172 in opposition to the pressure of an output driven governor pump 130 so that adjustment of the blades 116 is inhibited above a predetermined vehicle speed. The torque converter comprises a stator member 54 and a turbine 20 which is splined to a shaft 68 which carries a sun gear 150 of the planetary gear 16. The planetary gear 16 has a planet carrier 142 fast with an output shaft 12 and carrying intermeshed planetary gears 146, 138, the planets 146 meshing the input sun gear 150 and the planets 138 meshing a sun gear 144 which is alternatively stationable by a band-brake 156 to give reduced drive and is clutchable by a clutch 160 to the turbine shaft 68 to give direct drive. The planets 138 also mesh a ring gear 136 which is stationable by a band-brake 134 to give reverse drive. The clutches and brakes are applied by fluid pressure, application of pressure to the low speed brake 156 servo being controlled by a downshift control valve mechanism under the control of the vehicle operator. This servo is also energized during normal acceleration from a standing start, and an automatic control valve system (not described) controls the clutch and brake servos for direct drive.
