Abstract
402,344. Jib cranes. WATKINS, W. H., 95, Elthorne Avenue, Hanwell, London. May 12, 1933, No. 13905. [Classes 78 (ii) and 78 (iv).] A counterweight a is moved outwards by the pull in the hoisting rope and also by outward luffing of the jib, and the hoisting gear is arranged to run idly if the load to be raised from the ground exceeds a predetermined weight. As shown, the counterweight a, Fig. 1, is on an arm b pivoted at c to a lever d rocked by the jib. The arm b is also connected by links i, lever g, and links k to cranks j, which are geared to the planet-carrier l, Fig. 2, of an epicylic gear between the power shaft o and the hoisting drum. On attempting to lift a load, the planet-carrier l at first rotates without transmitting the drive and the arm b is moved outwards about the pivot c until the counterweight a supports the reaction of the planetcarrier and enables it to transmit the drive, but if the load exceeds the safe maximum for the crane, the planet-carrier will continue its movement without transmitting the drive. If the members b, d, g, i form a parallel-motion linkage, the load-balancing movement of the counterweight is not affected by the luffing, but the links d, i or the lever arms may be unequal. In a modification, Fig. 3, the lever g is pivoted at a point above the jib-pivot, and the fulcrum c for the counterweight a slides in guides in the jib-tail d under the control of a radius link i<1> which may be equal and parallel to the link i. As shown in Fig. 4, the epicyclic drive is omitted and the hoisting rope n is reeved over a sheave v on the jib-axis and a sheave w on the short arm of the counterweight lever b pivoted on the jib-tail, so that the hoisting-gear at first swings the counterweight a outwards until the sheave w is held against further movement. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the hoisting rope passes from the sheave v to the jib-head and a load-block, back to the sheave wand is anchored on the jib-tail.
