Abstract

496,189. Winches. SOC. DE CONSTRUCTION ET DE LOCATION D'APPAREILS DE LEVAGE. May 23, 1938, Nos. 15290 and 15291. Convention dates, Dec. 17, 1937 and March 21, 1938. [Class 78 (v)] In winches of the type in which a pilot hook is attached to a floating body, rising and falling with the waves, to facilitate its connection to a main lifting hook, and having friction means for maintaining the main cable taut, the lowering or lifting of a powertransmission pawl into and from effective position is caused by a friction-drive operated from the shaft of the friction device which produces the tension in the main cable. A motor 20 drives through pinions 23, 24, 26, the cage 27 of a sun-and-planet gear 35, 35<1>, the sun wheel 34 of which is fixed on the drum shaft 32. An alternative drive from the lay shaft 25 through friction discs 29, 29<1> and pinions 28, 31 maintains the tension of the main cable 11. On the drum shaft 32 is a ratchet wheel 33 engageable by a pawl 38 pivoted at 39 and loaded at 40 so as normally to hold the wheel 33 stationary in the direction a. A balance lever weighted at 41 tends to press the load 40 upward and to disconnect the pawl 38, but a hand lever 43, pivoted at 39 and provided with a spring-pressed detent 44 taking over a projection 45, carries a pin 42 which holds the balance lever out of action when the lever 43 is depressed. The load 40 is also controlled by a crank finger 46 on a spindle 47 having a weighted radial arm 48 adapted to be lifted by a finger 49 adjustably gripped on to the shaft 32. In operation, the light tackle 16 is hooked on to the load 17 by an operator thereon and drawn taut, and the motor 20 is started at a speed to raise the hook 15 slightly faster than the rise of the load 17 on the wave. The lever 43 being held up, the pawl 38 is free, and the hook 15 can be dragged down, to engage the load 17, by reason of the slip of the clutch 28, 29, 291. On lowering the 'lever 43 the pawl 38 can engage the wheel 33 when the load 17 tends to descend down a trough, and the shaft 32 starts to turn in the direction a and the finger 49 turns the spindle 47 to drop the crank finger 46. The shaft 32 is then held stationary and the sun-andplanet gear functions to rotate the drum 37 and lift the load clear of the waves.. The pawl 38 may alternatively be electrically operated from a distance. A servomotor may assist the operation of tackle 16. In another form the cable of tackle 16 extends through a pulley block to a smaller drum on the shaft 32.
