Abstract

9391. Livington, T. L. April 18. [Cognate Application, 19,474/11.] Jib cranes.-(1) The loading and discharging apparatus described in Specifications 4063/04 and 27,760/04, is operated by differential drum mechanism adapted to wind in and pay out a rope by continual operation in the same direction. Fig. 1 shows the application to the apparatus described in Specification 27,760/04 of the differential drum mechanism combined with multiplying-tackle. A rope f is connected at its ends to the larger ends of a pair of conical drums a mounted on parallel horizontal shafts geared together so that as one drum winds in the rope, the other pays out. In the bight of the rope f is a pulley u carried by the movable block t of a multiplying-tackle. A rope w is fixed to the block s mounted on a vertical post h and passes round the pulleys on the blocks s, t, over a pulley x on the luffing-frame g, between pulleys m<2>, down to a pulley y, round a corresponding pulley on the other side of the frame, up between pulleys m<2> on the other post h, and over pulley x<1> on the frame g, the end being attached at the point z. The arrangement is such that, when the frame g is vertical, the rope f is wound half-way along each of the drums a; the rope f then pays out when the drums a are rotated in either direction. In order to ensure the frame g passing through the vertical position when luffed from side to side, ropes are attached to the sides of a counterweight segment l arranged beneath the pivotal support of the frame. These ropes pass round the segment in opposite directions and are wound round a drum o mounted on a countershaft driven from the drums a. (2) Derrick apparatus generally is operated by differential drum mechanism combined with multiplying-tackle. Fig. 6 shows in plan the application to a slueing-derrick 1 and a fixed derrick 4. The hoisting-rope of each derrick is passed round a multiplying-tackle, the movable block of which carries a swivelling pulley round which passes the bight of a rope operated by the differential drums 9. 9*. In the derrick 1, each slueing-rope 24, 25 passes round an independent tackle, each tackle carrying a pulley in the bight of a rope operated by the differential drum mechanism 20, 21. The slueing-drums 20, 21 are driven from the hoisting-drums 9, and parallel portions are provided on the former, the arrangement being such that hoisting and slueing can take place simultaneously, slueing being deferred until the cargo is hoisted clear of the hatch. Clutch mechanism is described for controlling the drums. The derrick 1 may be used as a non- slueing derrick, when both derricks may be operated conjointly from a single lever. The application of the differential drum mechanism is also shown applied for transporting a beam or cradle suspended by four derricks,
