Abstract

2163. Archer, M. Jan. 30. Hauling and winding drums etc.; winches.-In electric hauling - machines, epicyclic reducing- gearing of a known type is used. Specifications No. 3066, A.D. 1867, and No. 512, A.D. 1882, [Abridgment Class Ships &c., Div. II.], are referred to. The device is shown applied to a hauling- drum g. On the shaft a, which is driven from the motor either direct or through spur or chain gearing, an eccentric b is fixed. A toothed wheel c, which is prevented from rotating by a link h, works freely on the eccentric and gears with an internaliy toothed wheel d which is concentric with the shaft a. One end of the link h is fixed to the wheel c and the other end slides on a pin j. Since the wheel c is prevented from rotating but is carried around by the eccentric, the wheel d is rotated by an amount corresponding to the difference in the number of teeth on the two wheels for every revolution of the driving-shaft a. A great reduction of speed is thus obtained, and no brake is needed. The invention consists in forming the wheel d with a long boss c to which the drum g is keyed or otherwise fixed ; or the drum may be carried loosely on the boss and clutched to it when required.
